Rachel Weisz 在 Donmar Warehouse 演出 Blanche DuBois，聽說在南半球的雪黎，凱特布蘭琪也在演出同樣的角色，讓我恨不得自己能插翅南飛，好好比較一下兩名當代傑出女演員對同一角色的不同詮釋。這場戲應該是倫敦夏末時分最重要的劇場大事之一。各方劇評多在四顆星，小小只能容納三百多名觀眾的劇院，半年前票就已銷售一空，每天戲院開門前一小時就有人在熱切排著當日限量票。然而看完之後我的心頭又是五味雜陳。
一進劇場，熟悉的感覺再度湧現：幾次來看 Donmar Warehouse，都覺得舞台設計實在是夠精緻。 Christopher Oram，除了前陣子在 Wyndhams Theatre 的 Donmar Westend 四齣劇都由其操刀舞台設計外，近期還有今年的 A View from the Bridge，RSC 的 King Lear 和 The Seagull，都是由他完成的。角落直上屋頂的雕花旋轉梯，連接至觀眾席的雕花欄杆、屋簷，整個劇場和舞台緊緊相扣。巧妙運用燈光及動線，讓四方的舞台形成四五個空間 (樓梯、屋頂露台、街道、客廳、臥房、浴室) ，這是我對舞台劇深深著迷的重要原因：一座舞台，可以比電影螢幕更寬廣、更靈活、也更動人。
燈一亮馬上出現的，是乘著慾望街車來到天堂路，投靠妹妹和妹夫的 Blanche
DuBois。這個在半世紀前曾有費雯麗在舞台和電影裡詮釋的角色，如今由 Rachel Weisz
來演出，一個纖細脆弱，有點神經質，酗酒，妄想症，和不堪回顧的過去的中年女子。她對自己的年華老去有過度的防備和敏感，總是需要旁人一再地稱讚給予她自
信和安心。有些劇評家說，由瑞秋懷茲演來詮釋韶光已逝的女主角實在太不具說服力，因為現在的她，正值美貌的頂峰啊!! 蒼白的 Rachel
，和她身上的猩紅色浴袍相映襯，艷麗與嬌弱，的確令人心折。然而，這樣的美貌，卻不斷地被她的神經質所干擾，對於過去的急於掩飾，對於妹婿的不順眼，對於
愛與慾的渴求，複雜的情緒在她的臉上風雲變色，演來不過火而又恰到好處。滿懷著浪漫情懷，帶著微笑，她說出了本劇經典對白：她渴求的是"beauty
of the mind and richness of the spirit and tenderness of the
heart"。時不時露出的天真表情，當她說著，她只是在演出別人所期望的形象，盡力取得別人的歡心，她的真誠和虛偽同時達到了極致的平衡，嘆為觀止。
Elliot Cowan 和 Ruth Wilson 分別演出波蘭裔的妹夫 Stanley和妹妹 Stella。Stanley 是 Blanche 的強烈對比，代表了現實生活和勞工階級，Blanche的突然來訪而又賴著不走，不只是現實的麻煩，而同時也是整個社群格格不入的外來者。對 Stanley來說，Blanche的風華絕代只是裝腔作勢與虛情假意。而 Stella 夾在現實/愛情與過去/親情之間，產生矛盾的掙扎。兩名演員的力道都還算不錯。其他的演員也都中規中矩。然而，讓我五味雜陳的是什麼呢??
今年倫敦一直上演各式好萊塢劇碼。在看完 A View From the Bridge、Sunset Boulevard、On the
Waterfront
之後，我心中的不耐怨氣已經累積得越來越高。其實，這幾場都是非常棒的製作，各有其特色，然而，過度直接近似教條公式化的故事結構，顯而易見的簡單邏輯，
讓我總是有揮之不去的不耐。雖然舞台劇場的製作水準與創意都在四顆星甚至五顆星之間，但劇本本身我卻只能給個兩三顆星。這樣的不耐感，在看這場總共三個小
時的慾望街車時，再度體現。田納西威廉斯先生的文筆無庸置疑，但與其說是劇本，還不如把它當成小說更適合。書面敘述單靠文字需要細緻的文理脈絡，然而搬上
舞台，有了表情、動作、燈光、空氣等等相結合，力道已經足夠，當年的經典劇本，成了累贅沉重、過度繁瑣的台詞，免不了有拖泥帶水、碎碎呢喃之感，不管是
Blanche 的一點也不內心的內心戲，還有 Stanely
蘊釀已久的攤牌與對峙，過多的「說明」，欠缺了一分含蓄內歛，那樣一分足夠讓人反覆回味、意猶未盡、低頭思量的滋味。
而導演 Rob Ashford (同時是位編舞家)，卻像是嫌劇本不夠白話似的，把更多的東西淺白地演出來：Blanche 看到的幻影，她年輕時所嫁、有同性戀傾向的前任丈夫，以及幻想中跟隨她左右仰慕者和女僕等等，都實際的現身舞台穿梭其間，將心靈鬼魅實體化，雖然不是不可 行，然而實際執行的效果，不知是幾位臨演的肢體訓練不夠，還是台步的節奏掌握不佳，總是隱約有畫蛇添足、節奏凝窒的累贅感。這個寫就於 1947 年的劇本，在當時的確會引起頗大的衝擊，其中涉及多樣化且敏感的議題，但是在今天，情節本身的震驚性已經減弱了不少，導演再用過於「清晰」的方式去呈現， 讓這齣劇不但失去「震撼力」也失去「韻味」，這讓我感到十分可惜。
